A gynecololgic oncologist is an obstetrician/gynecologist who specializes in the care of women with precancerous conditions or cancer of the reproductive organs. To receive board certification, a physician must first complete an approved, 4-year residency program in obstetrics and gynecology followed by a 2-4 year clinical fellowship in gynecologic oncology.

Gynecologic oncologists are trained in providing comprehensive care. They are skilled surgical oncologists who are also trained in administering chemotherapy. They also provide important supportive services like pain management, management of medical or surgical complications from treatment, complications of the cancer, and hospice referral.
